About the Breed - Yorkshire Terrier (Yorkies)
A healthy Yorkie is a small dog that sports either a long, silky coat or a short neatly trimmed coat. Yorkies come in various colors but are commonly traditional which is blue and tan in color. The chocolate, parti and merle Yorkies are less common but just as beautiful and considered exotic.
Yorkies generally weigh between 4 and 7 pounds however can be smaller or heavier as evident by the infamous teacup weighing between 2 and 4 pounds or the larger Yorkies that can weigh up to 10lbs. A healthy Yorkie should also have a balanced diet that offers a variety and meets their nutritional needs.
A healthy Yorkie should have a lively and inquisitive personality. They are very active and enjoy learning new tricks and exploring new places. Yorkies can also be very spoiled so they need to be in an environment with lots of love and attention.
Regular grooming is necessary to keep their coat and skin healthy and frequent brushing is important to avoid their hair becoming matted. Some common health problems that can affect Yorkies are patellar luxation, collapsing trachea, eye problems, liver disorders, heart disease and intervertebral disc disease. To prevent or treat these conditions, a healthy Yorkie should engage in regular exercise and have regular veterinary check-ups. A healthy Yorkie can live up to 15 years or more with proper care and love.
